Bromeliads have been given a bad rap beCause many of them hold water in their central cups, and so have been blamed for mosquitoes. We used to believe it, too. Yes, mosquitos are attracted to standing water. Yet after repeatedly witnessing bromeliads plantings in mosquito prone areas, it is apparent that the number diminished. This paradox is because frogs, lizards (and critters you don't even want to know about) quickly learn that this is a smorgasboard and mosquitos are snatched up before they lay get a chance to lay their eggs. Yum.

Bromeliads are...

A footnote: most bromeliads will provide you with years if not decades of success provided you cut the supplemental watering.

BROMELIADS

We can't promote bromeliads enough. Even when used in modest quantities, they present an ultra tropical feel any landscape and garden. Moreover, their cold hardiness and abilty to yawn at drought, negligence and abuse is astounding.

SILVER VASE Aechmea fasciata
One of first bromeliads to be introduced to horticulture and its popularity has skyrocketed ever since. A perfect plant: beautiful foilage and glorious flowers. We've witnessed these plants thrive in dark moist corners and in dry full sun locations. As a boon to you and us, this is one of the few Bromeliads that is readily available in quantites. With luck, your Landscaper can procure newer varieties. Red leafed, pure white, variegated, spinelss, each more beautiful than the next. Amazing.

SPANISH MOSS Tillandsia usneoides
Myths about this plant are more prolific the the plant itself. No, it is not a parasite. No, you do not 'get bugs from it'. No, it won't cause the end of the world. Quite the opposite, this is the most beautiful air quality monitor in the world, it will not grow where there is the slightest pollution.

Spanish moss is mostly appreciated far away from its native range. Upon seeing the wispy drapes, Northeners will exclaim "Beautiful", Europeans say "How Romantic" with a sigh, and in Ausralia and Asia hard cash is paid for just a few strands. The floral industry has relied on this gem for years. Think of that next time you rake or drive over fallen clumps. By the way, in the Nursery and Landscaping industry, this is a plant that money just can't buy.

VRIESEA Vriesea sp. and hybrids
Vrieseas are available in all sizes, some are grown for their flowers, others for foilage. The flowering Vrieseas sport a very exotic bloom structure, availble in every fruit juice color, which visually comparable to Heliconias, but with a tiny fraction of the plant size and without the ungainly leaves. The massive foilage Vrieseas are pure impact and become larger and more spectacular each year. Even a potted lone specimen can change the entire ambience of a garden.

NEOREGELIA Neoregelia hybrids
There are so many Neo hybrids, ranging from miniature to monstrous, we will never be able to keep track of them, nor begin to list the many colors and patterns they parade. All we can say is: Exotic. Funky Fresh Color Party. Pow. Wow.

Beside some great species, some of the our favorite hybrids which are landscape proven and more apt to be found in quantities sport such names as 'Screaming Tiger' ,'Picasso', 'Angel Face', 'Cotton Candy', 'Voodoo Doll', 'Moonshine' and yes, 'Hannibal Lector'. You'll love them all.

GUZMANIA Guzmania hybrids
Popcicle colors. Evenly moist and a shady shelterd spot. Dislikes cold.

PINEAPPLE Ananus cvs.
A fruit once so exotic, it was reserved only for Kings. Feeling regal? Spineless. Variegated.

TILLANDSIA Tillandsia sp.
Stick 'em in trees, throw 'em om rocks. Anywhere there is light and air, that's where they'll grow. If only our loved ones were so easy. Of all the plants we've abused and tested for our clients, these have to be the most kill-proof. Tillandsias' portable, dirtfree qualities lend themselves to crazy, creative landscape displays. Let us design one for your tastes.

Tillandsias species number in the hundreds, more are discovered every year, with no end in sight. Hybridizers have just begun to tinker with these toys, and not a minute to soon. Most Tillandsias haven't been introdued commercially yet, but we predict a wave of popularity in the near future. Who knows? Someday our grandchildren may be wearing these as clothes.
